PGG visit to Tythrop Park and Rycote Park

Tythrop House, Thame

Tythrop Park 10 acres of gardens surround a late 17th century Manor House, set within 60 acres of Parkland.

The Gardens have recently undergone some major changes, with a hard landscape design by ‘Robert Myers’ incorporating within the old walled area: A Pool Garden with grass rich borders and a white and green theme. A kitchen /cutting Garden with a new Glasshouse at its centre, also a long oak arbored walk with old rambling Roses.
In contrast the Gardens around the house have a more traditional feel, with a large intricate Buxus Parterre , deep mixed borders, a large pond, Rose gardens and many old trees and shrubs.

Visit www.ngs.org.uk for more information.

Rycote Park

Rycote Park was bought by Mr and Mrs Bernard Taylor in 2000, since when the house, grounds, farm and woodland have undergone much renovation, restoration and re-development. All of which reflects the passion and love Sarah and Bernard Taylor have for it and their profound commitment to its future.

Rycote has undergone various incarnations from medieval manor house to Tudor palace to the Grade 1 country residence of today which reflects many aspects of its history. As such, the gardens through history have reflected the contemporary styles and fashions, from Elizabethan parterre with raised walkway and gazebo, to Capability Brown landscape with serpentine lake. Today, with a nod to all these aspects, whether long since replaced or still evident and with the input of modern interpretation (with three formal gardens designed by Elizabeth Banks) the gardens continue to grow and develop always with an eye to the genius of the place.

An Edwardian walled garden of a 1/3 acre, encompassing an Alitex glasshouse, provides fruit and vegetables to the house all year round, with specific emphasis on catering for the shooting season from September to February. Further fruit production is found in the 1930’s orchard and newly planted 6 tier espalier pears designed to soften the view of the tennis court.
Further away from the house the remit of the Garden Department extends to the landscape surrounding the C15th chapel, much of the 11acre lake, various ponds and woodland edges. It is these areas in particular which will continue to see much development in the coming years.
