Grimsthorpe Castle has been home to the Willoughby de Eresby family since 1516 and home to Eddy Peeling as Head Gardener for the last forty years. 2013 will be Eddy’s last year in charge and this meeting will give us all the opportunity to appreciate his lifetime’s work and loyal service.

Visit to Castle Kennedy April ’13

Photographs of the recent PGG visit to Castle Kennedy Gardens, a part of Stair Estates, located in the South West corner of Scotland. This part of Scotland is surrounded on three sides by the sea, and the influence of the Gulf Stream provides a micro climate not found in many other parts of the United Kingdom.

The visit included a talk from Head Gardener, John MacArthur of that Ilk followed by a garden tour of the Rhododendrons in the south side of the Gardens and the Round Pond and Lochinch Castle Gardens.

Join us for the PGG picnic at Adwell House in September

With a guaranteed sunny afternoon we have decided to have a picnic at Adwell House for members and families of the Guild. All you are required to do is bring your own food and drink together with chairs and rugs if you wish. There will be a gas barbeque if anyone would like to bring some sausages or burgers to cook. The idea is for everyone to enjoy a picnic in the lovely Oxfordshire countryside, have a chat and then a walk around the gardens and lakes at Adwell. If the sunny afternoon doesn’t materialise then we can shelter in our marquee which can seat 100 people.

Hurry! Traineeship applications closing date is the 10th May

The PGG provides successful candidates to its Traineeship Scheme with the opportunity to gain ‘hands on’ practical experience, working as part of the team of three major gardens throughout the country. All trainees while on the three year scheme receive at least minimum wage with accommodation to rent. Applicants therefore must have previous experience working under a professional gardener for at least six months to one year. RHS or other college qualifications will be an added advantage.

Applications for this coming September need to be made now, closing date is the 10th May for 2013.

Garden Pest Management Masterclasses 2013

After last year’s successful introduction, the PGG have organised a new series of one day garden pest management masterclasses around the UK to help you understand, recognise and control garden pests. The venues for this year are: Abbotswood Gardens on June 20th and Newnham College on September 11th.

All levels catered for

The masterclass covers general pest recognition and control, use of biological controls, new pests recently established in the UK and a ‘Pest Clinic’ for attendees to bring samples of pest problems from their gardens for identification and advice.

Details

The one day course to suits all levels and full workshop notes supplied. The cost for each session will be £25.00 inclusive of light refreshments.
