Alt-y-Bela

This is a private visit to garden designer Arne Maynard’s garden at Allt-y-Bela, which is not open to the public.

Allt-y-Bela, nestles at the end of a narrow winding lane, lined by high-banked native hedgerows. It is only a 15-minute drive from the M4, making it easily accessible from his main design studio in London, but once there, civilisation seems a million miles away. Clipped yew and beech topiary, signatures of Arne’s garden design style, heralds your arrival at the extraordinary medieval farmhouse, complete with Renaissance bell tower.

In the immediate vicinity of the house, which is painted an exquisite burnt orange, the formality of a knot garden and topiary, a potager and herbs reflect the refinement of the Elizabethan interiors. Very quickly this gives way to rolling earthworks, a dusting of wildflowers and a relaxed orchard.  All the boundaries have been removed, or made as transparent as possible, to allow the garden to bleed seamlessly into the ancient pastures and woodland beyond.

Development of the two acre garden is on-going: Arne has plans to introduce a winding channel of water through the garden and to further develop the courtyard between the house and the granary, where he holds garden courses and meets clients. The garden’s ‘sense of place’ is certainly apparent, which is testament to Arne’s unstinting search for the harmony that can exist between a house, its garden and the environment in which it is set.

High Glanau Manor

This is a Grade 2 Listed Edwardian garden in the Arts and Crafts style designed by Henry Avery Tipping in 1922. It has all the features you would expect of an Arts and Crafts garden such as pools, pergolas, herbaceous borders and roses and glasshouses. The current owners, Helena and Hilary Gerrish, have restored the garden over the last decade or so to its former glory. Helena has written a book called Edwardian Country Life about Tipping and High Glanau.
