PGG visit to Ballynure House Gardens

David Reid Scott’s grandmother, Star Mitchell, was an avid gardener who spent many hours tending the old walled garden at Ballynure, which included two stunning herbaceous borders, a spring garden, rock garden, rose garden and cutting border. When she died in 1976 David had neither the money nor the time to maintain the walled garden and it became a wonderful wilderness in which his children got to play in a real ‘Secret Garden’. He vowed he would one day restore the gardens to their ‘former glory’.

When David was in a position to restore the gardens he decided not to focus on the walled garden as it was some way from the house, but instead chose to create a garden around the house which was at that time surrounded by laurel and brambles with no flowers in sight.

Since the early 1990s the garden has been an ever-evolving project and David and Clare have put a huge amount of time and effort into creating it. In addition to plant- filled borders, David and Clare also created a stunning lake, an arboretum, numerous woodland walks and they have planted an array of stunning trees and large shrubs which are dotted around the grounds. The walled garden now holds polytunnels, a potting shed and a paddock where the horses graze.

Sadly, David passed away in 2020 but Clare and Head Gardener Brian O’Reilly continue David’s legacy of ensuring Ballynure Garden looks spectacular throughout the seasons.
