PGG visit to Bardney Manor Walled Garden

Discover Lincolnshire’s best kept secret. From as early as 1086, recorded in the Domesday Book, there are records of a Manor and farm dwellings at Bardney. These gardens were once described as the ‘largest walled gardens in the country’ with glass houses stretching for some 3/4 of a mile containing grapes and all manner of exotic tropical fruit and were regularly visited by Queen Victoria. There are many trees of note still surviving from these past times.

You have to visit Bardney to be astounded by the scale of the task being undertaken in these gardens at the former home of Lord Willoughby (a general in Cromwell’s army) and Lord John Sutton Sharpe. The gardens were the trial grounds for Sharpe and Sutton Seeds in the 18th century and before that had welcomed naturalist and botanist Sir Joseph Banks.

This is your chance to get in an early visit to the recently started project as owner and head gardener Samantha Wright re-establishes the long ago abandoned Grade II listed formal walled garden. It is situated just 11 miles from Lincoln and 12 miles from Horncastle, where there is the famous museum celebrating Sir Joseph Banks (open on Fridays 10.00 a.m. to 16.00 p.m.).

Programme

12.00p.m. Meet for 12.30 start. Hot drinks and biscuits available to purchase. Welcome and introduction by Samantha Wright, owner and head gardener. This is followed by a tour of the garden which is now well into the restoration project.
After the tour there will be refreshments in the tea room or on the terrace.
