PGG visit to Brechin Castle and Dunninald Castle Gardens

Brechin Castle

Brechin Castle and the splendid castle gardens have been in the Dalhousie Family since the 17th century and cover 55,000 acres of stunning countryside from rich farmland in the Vale of Strathmore at Brechin and Edzell to the summits of the Grampian Mountains. Brechin’s walled garden is considered by many to be one of the finest well-maintained private gardens in Scotland. It is now open to the public at select times each year so that others can enjoy all the beauty it has to offer. From its uniquely curving walls and wide gravelled paths to its secluded smaller paths and treasured ornaments, there is something to behold for everyone in addition to the stunning blend of ancient and modern plantings. May sees the rhododendrons and azaleas hit the peak of their flowering to wonderful effect throughout the month. This is a lovely garden to visit at any time of year, but it is something to behold in the spring.

Dunninald Castle

Dunninald Castle is a family home with an acclaimed walled garden, set in a planned landscape of woods and wild garden. Dunninald was built in 1824 by the architect James Gillespie Graham in the Gothic revival style. Visitors are welcome to explore the 100 acres of woods, wild garden, policies and a walled garden. A highlight of Dunninald is the walled garden, a short walk from the house; most visitors enter though the Union Gate, made by Browns of Montrose in 1907; roses, thistles, daffodils and shamrocks represent each of the four home nations. The walled garden is planted with rose borders, traditional mixed borders, vegetables, herbs, soft fruits and fruit trees and there is a greenhouse as well.
