PGG visit to Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo is England’s most visited tourist attraction outside of London and is home to thousands of plants within its award winning grounds.
Since first opening in 1931 by George Mottershead, the son of a nurseryman and successful market gardener, horticulture and the plant collections have always had an important role across the site, alongside the animal collections held at the zoo. With over 2,500 plant species cultivated within the 128 acre site, find out how the gardens and plant collections continue to be developed as part of the immersive visitor experience through a series of feature gardens and geographic plant collections, alongside the larger themed plantings that can be found in the ‘Islands’ and new ‘Heart of Africa’ developments.
The visit will also include access to the behind the scenes greenhouse complex to see the five national plant collections that are held at the zoo, alongside the larger orchid, cacti and carnivorous plant collections and find out about the plant conservation projects that the horticultural team are involved with.
