GLAS Trade Show

For the PGG Ireland midsummer visit we start the day at the Garden Landscape Amenity and Sports Turf (GLAS) Trade Show at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght, Co Dublin. Doors open from 9am. This event features some of the leading suppliers across the sector; they will discuss and share their insights and expertise on the latest consumer trends and buyer behavior, rising input costs, peat alternatives, labour shortages, careers and upskilling, sustainability, biodiversity, entering new markets, growth opportunities free seminars and much much more. Be sure to pre-register for your free ticket. You will find this on the GLAS website.

Having viewed all the trade stands and met with old and new acquaintances we then travel a short distance, just 10 minutes to Belgard Castle Gardens for 2pm where we will be given a guided tour of this wonderful property by Head Gardener Rachel O’Sullivan.

Belgard Castle

Belgard Castle is a Georgian house and medieval tower on 90 acres in the suburbs of Dublin. Originally constructed as one of the network of fortified structures built to defend the Pale, the estate has been home to many families, and each played a role in developing the house, grounds and gardens. The most well-known family to inhabit Belgard Castle were the Talbots, from the 15th to the 17th century. The last family to live at Belgard Castle, the Maude family, sold it in 1963. The estate has been in corporate ownership since then and is rarely open to visitors. The designed landscape of the 19th century is still intact, and ongoing restoration works are bringing it back to its former glory. The estate comprises parkland; fine examples of specimen and veteran trees; formal beds; pleasure grounds; walled gardens; grassland; wetland; and woodland. The restored walled gardens contain a productive kitchen garden, a rose garden and a glasshouse yard. Much of the historic parkland has recently undergone a conversion from tillage land to create nearly 50 acres of native meadow. An orchard of heritage fruit trees was planted in 2019 to restore a section of orchard recorded on the 1838 OS map.
