PGG visit to Gordon Castle Walled Garden

A hidden gem situated between the River Spey and the Moray Coast, Gordon Castle Walled Garden is one of Scotland’s best kept secrets. At almost eight acres in size it is one of the oldest and largest kitchen gardens in Britain and has been lovingly restored to its former glory with a modern design by world famous designer Arne Maynard. An oasis of peace and tranquillity, the garden is also a hive of activity.

Constantly tended by a small team of dedicated gardeners, a myriad of herbs, cut flowers, fruit and vegetables are grown within its ancient walls making the garden as beautiful as it is productive.

The Walled Garden at Gordon Castle has a long history, with evidence of a walled garden existing here from the 17th century. Built in its present form in 1803, it was soon bustling with activity and abundant with flowers, fruit, vegetables and herbs to supply the Castle, spiritual home of Clan Gordon.

After the Second World War, its eight acres were given over to commercial raspberry growing, then fell into disuse in the 1980s. The Garden was kept weed-free and the original 259 wall-trained fruit trees well-tended. These include apple, plum, pear, peach, apricot, nectarine and fig trees.

The Walled Garden’s national significance was recognised in the Inventory of Gardens and De-signed Landscapes in Scotland (1987), where it was judged to be ‘outstanding,’ and a ‘work of art.’ Since 2011, the family have been painstakingly and lovingly restoring their ancestors’ garden to its former glory.

Nature plays a key role in defining the quality of a great single malt whisky. Water is key, and the extremely pure Highland water is an essential part of Glen Grant’s makeup.

When James Grant founded his distillery in Speyside, he decided to celebrate the natural beauty of the area by building an elegant Victorian garden.

We have recently restored these beautiful gardens to their full original glory. Follow the small path as it winds its way up the garden passing glorious flowerbeds and luscious lawns. The pathway crisscrosses the stream and leads to a little cave where Major Grant kept his own private Glen Grant barrel.
