PGG Southern area visit to Holkham Hall, Norfolk Friday 4th September 2015
Holkham Hall is a grand palladian mansion designed by William Kent for Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester. The 6 and a half acres of walled gardens have been undergoing a major restoration, firstly the large range of victorian glasshouses and more recently a complete replanting of the gardens. Members have been invited by PGG member and head gardener Phillip Oldham to tour the gardens, the private arboretum (only opened twice a year) and the forestry operations which produces 1300m3 of wood chip for the estates biomass boilers.
At the end of the day for those wishing to there will be an opportunity to walk through the pine forest to the beautiful Holkham beach, 4 miles of unspoilt white gold sand and voted best beach in the UK by a poll of travel writers. The beach is part of one of the largest nature reserves in the country and is home to many rare species of flora and fauna.
