PGG visit to Holme For Gardens and Encombe (NB. Numbers limited to 30)
Holme For Gardens
Holme is a family business run by Simon and Liz Goldsack, which includes a successful garden centre, farm shop, café and the garden. Holme is all about the place, the beautiful surroundings, the relaxing ambience, the gorgeous plants, the gardens, the birdsong and most of all about people enjoying themselves.
The design of this beautiful seven-acre Dorset garden contains cleverly linked formal and informal sections. Collections of high trees and shrubs are grown in harmony with native wildlife. Luxuriant colour-themed borders, an annual flower field, flowering grasses and leaf colours for autumn, bright stems, topiary and heathers in winter, with large collections of perennials and bulbs in spring.
The garden contains many features such as the Pear Tunnel, Pastel Borders, a grass amphitheatre, Butterfly Valley, pond, 130m Lavender Avenue, Holme Henge, Palm garden, oak woodland, Cloister Garden and several flower meadows under different management regimes. Just finished is the Wisteria Walk which has been planted with 15 varieties which will show off in the years to come.
Encombe
The historic Encombe House and Estate are nestled within a unique coastal valley in the Purbeck hills. Largely hidden from the surrounding hillsides, the house and garden have developed over the past few hundred years. The main garden to the south of the house includes large sweeping borders filled with grasses and perennials which embrace the Temple. Behind this lies the walled garden, where deep herbaceous beds follow the walls and, in the centre, surrounded by a young orchard, is a yew-hedged garden planted around a millstone fountain. Elsewhere, there are woodland walks, wildflower meadows, lakes, a kitchen garden and glasshouse, and wilder areas, all with glimpses of the Jurassic coast.
The garden and estate have been extensively redeveloped since the current owners bought the estate in 2009. A modern, sympathetic design by Tom Stuart-Smith has been implemented since 2011, with the majority of the hard and soft landscaping being completed in 2012. The extensive borders mix both the modern prairie and the traditional English cottage styles and are underpinned with structural shrub planting. A small team is responsible for the 65 acres of pleasure and managed grounds, with help from contractors for more specialist tasks.
The Guild first visited Encombe in July 2016 and this is a chance to see how the garden has matured and developed since then. The garden is not normally open to the public and the PGG visit is by kind permission of Mr and Mrs James Gaggero.
