PGG visit to Houghton Hall Walled Garden
Houghton Hall was built for the first British prime minister, Sir Robert Walpole in the 1720s and has remained in the same family ever since.
The current Lord Cholmondeley, inherited Houghton in 1989 and had the vision to lay out a walled garden on the site of the old 19th century kitchen garden footprint, as a memorial to his grandmother, Lady Sybil Cholmondeley, who always wanted a ‘proper’ garden, but always had to attend to matters within the house.
The 5-acre walled garden is divided into quarters which are sub divided again to create 23 distinct areas. Amongst these there is a 120m long double herbaceous border, Rose Garden, Italian Garden, fruit and veg area, cut flower borders, a wisteria walkway and the unique Waterflame garden.
There is a surprise around every corner as well as there being a feast of colour and scent. In the afternoon we’ll take you on a tour of the wider parkland.
