PGG visit to Kew Gardens
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a visit to the world famous Kew Gardens on Wednesday 1st July 2020. It’s a long time since we visited Kew as group and (Head of School of Horticulture and PGG member) has put together this fantastic programme for us.
Please choose two of the tours (one morning, one afternoon) from the following:
Morning tours
Tour 1 – Kew’s – Economic Botany collection…..actually quite fascinating seeing/hearing how Kew was involved in plant products from around the world….coffee, rubber etc.
Tour 2 – Biosecurity, plant health and quarantine….looking at how Kew deals with this subject…. which affects us all working in horticulture.
Afternoon tours
Tour 3 – Managing Kew’s tree collections.
Tour 4 – Kew’s Alpine collection.
Programme
10.30am – Arrive via Jodrell gate (map provided when booked) and make way to School of Horticulture (SoH) building
10.30am – 11.10am Coffee/tea/biscuits on arrival at SoH. Welcome and tour of SoH from Tim Hughes, Head of the School of Horticulture
11.10am – 11.20am Travel time to either Tour 1 or Tour 2
11.20am – 12.20pm Tour 1 – Kew’s – Economic Botany Collection
or
11.20am – 12.20pm Tour 2 – Kew’s – Biosecurity, Plant Health and Quarantine
12.20am – 12.30pm Travel time back to SoH
12.30pm – 13.10pm Lunch. Guests to bring own packed lunches – coffee/tea can be provided and there are toilet facilities in the SoH. Folk can eat in the SoH or make their way just outside to the Evolution garden or Grass garden/Aquatic ponds where there is plenty of seating.
13.15 Meet back at SoH.
13.15pm – 13.25pm Travel time to either Tour 3 or Tour 4
13.25pm – 14.30pm Tour 3 – Managing Kew’s Tree Collections
or
13.25pm – 14.30pm Tour 4 – Kew’s Alpine Collections
From 14.30pm until the gardens close, PGG guests free time to look around Kew at their leisure.
Exit at any on the main entrances:
- Victoria gate
- Elizabeth gate
- Brentford gate
- Lion gate
(we can provide everyone with a map of the gardens).
