Minterne and Sherborne – two fine Dorset gardens, both quite large, and having been in the same family ownership for many years; together they hold a host of interesting and historical features making them a unique and unforgettable experience. An exciting and varied day is anticipated, culminating in a relaxing informal barbeque in a picturesque setting by the 50 acre lake at Sherborne Castle.
The Minterne Valley was landscaped in the manner of Capability Brown in the 18th Century. The gardens are laid out in a horseshoe below Minterne House, with a chain of small lakes, waterfalls and streams. They contain a unique collection of Himalayan rhododendrons and azaleas, with spring bulbs, cherries, maples and many fine and rare trees; the garden is noted for its autumn colouring. When Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown created the lake at Sherborne Castle in 1753, he gave Sherborne the very latest in landscape gardening.
