PGG visit to Mount St John, Earley Ornamentals, Yorkshire Plants in Thirsk, Yorkshire
Mount St John
Mount St John, a private garden not usually open to the public. Mount St John is privately owned by Chris Blundell, one of the partners in the Provenance chain of Inns which include The Carpenter’s Arms. The gardens are under the care of Lizzie Balmforth, latterly of RHS Harlow Carr, assisted by a team of seven, including one working just on produce and cutting flowers for the pub chain. The house itself is on the site of a much older property and indeed carp ponds, probably from monastic times, have been turned into a valley garden with brown trout in the bottom pond and water hawthorn, a surprisingly peppery leaf from a ginger-like rhizome, in the upper ponds.
