PGG visit to Barnsdale Gardens.
Rutland’s Barnsdale Gardens came top in a 2018 poll to find the best 100 visitor gardens in the UK. Garden News readers voted in their thousands over the summer with Barnsdale emerging as the victor, beating hundreds of famous attractions, including Kew Gardens, Wisley RHS Garden and, in second place, Northern Ireland’s Bangor Castle.
Barnsdale is made up of 38 different themed gardens, and was founded by TV gardener Geoff Hamilton. His son Nick, who now owns and runs the gardens, was delighted by news of the award. “We’re all over the moon, and really want to thank everyone who voted for us,” he said. “My dad had a great passion for inspiring people to try new ideas and that’s what we continue to do to this day.”
And this award shows that they are achieving that in the best way possible. We send our congratulations to Nick and his team for a job well done. One piece of advice I was given when looking for a job was “It’s always easier to improve a poor garden than a really good one” Imagine therefore the dilemma facing Nick when he lost not only his Father but the face of Gardening on television and mentor to the nation’s gardeners. How do you follow The Best? Well, as Nick and the entire team has clearly shown. If it’s in your DNA you simply keep improving. No resting on your Prunus laurocerasus ‘Rotundifolia’ here at Barnsdale!
