PGG visit to Thorp Perrow

We have an autumnal visit to the beautiful gardens and arboretum of Thorp Perrow followed by lunch, great company, and a horticulturally themed quiz… with prizes!

Thorp Perrow is the most important arboretum in the north of England and is unique to Britain, if not Europe, in that it was the creation of one man, Colonel Sir Leonard Ropner (1895-1977). His son, Sir John Ropner (1937-2016) and wife, Niki, then went on to develop the arboretum you see today. Sir Henry Ropner, his wife Natasha and family are the current custodians. The arboretum covers 100 acres and is currently home to five National Plant Collections and 51 Champion Trees (recorded and designated by the Tree Register of the British Isles).

As you might imagine the autumn season offers a magnificent display of autumnal colour. After the visit we will proceed to a suitable eatery (details for the pub to be confirmed in the April Journal) for hearty food, good conversation, laughter and what I hope is now our annual horticulturally themed quiz… with prizes!

Programme

10.00am. Arrive for refreshments.
10.30am. Guided tour with Faith and time to explore the collection.
12.30/45pm. Depart for the pub for food, good conversation, laughter, and the chance to show off your horticultural prowess and win a prize!

Directions

No access to Arboretum from Firby Road (past Bedale Leisure Centre), use sat nav postcode DL8 2PS.

From Bedale: follow signposts towards Masham (B6268), ignore signs for Thorp Perrow along Firby Road (also signposted Leisure Centre), and continue for approx one mile. Turn left following signs for Snape and the entrance to the Arboretum is approx 1/4 mile on the left.

Cost

Cost £20.00 entry to the gardens/arboretum, tour with the garden’s curator Faith and refreshments upon arrival.
