PGG visit to Trotton Place and The Private Gardens of Petworth House

Trotton Place

A privately owned working garden encompassing almost 9 acres of ornamental borders, lawns, meadows, topiary and water features, with a large walled kitchen garden at its heart producing fruit, vegetables and cut flowers.

Tour of the Private Gardens of Petworth House with Lady Egremont & The Head Gardener Jonathan

The gardens of Lord & Lady Egremont have been developed since the early eighties by Lady Egremont and along with the head gardener. The south lawn area was once closely mown turf and is now a series of scallops of long grass and wild flower meadows that sweep their way down from the main house. It stands against the back drop of the 700 acres Capability Brown landscape and deer park. Beyond this is the 6 acres of walled garden set back some distance from the main house, which is split into a series of rooms sub-divided by hedges and walls within them.

The Kitchen garden is just over ½ an acre producing fruit and vegetables for the main house managed as a no dig policy. Within the Kitchen garden the new glasshouse that is just about to become functional again has replaced the old dilapidated cedar house for a more modern structure.

In the far part of the walled garden the old existing sheep paddock has been planted with a traditional orchard using the more vigorous rootstocks. The varieties have not only been chosen for their edible qualities but also for their ornamental ones as well. Within this area is a peach and nectarine house that is the only one surviving glasshouse from the Fred Streeter era.
