PGG visit to Wormsley Estate and Bledlow Manor
Wormsley Estate
Although the estate dates back much further, the walled gardens at Wormsley were originally designed in the 18th century. The walled garden is situated in the most sheltered spot on the estate and in 1985 Penelope Hobhouse, together with Simon Johnson, was commissioned to rebuild the garden, designing it into quadrants separated in true Chiltern style by knapped-flint paths and brick with buttressed Yew hedges. Over the years, it has been meticulously restored and maintained while remaining true to the original brief and is a stunning backdrop for any event.
Bledlow Manor
It was a perfect summer’s day when I last visited Bledlow Manor in 2006 and I’ve been keen to return ever since. The present garden has been created by the Carringtons since the war with many features added over the years; by 1969 the present garden was really taking shape. The garden is well planned with fine shrub and herbaceous borders. The garden rooms and features take the eye from one area to another and you are continually encouraged to explore, moving with ease from one feature to another.
The statuary throughout the garden, and particularly in the sculpture garden, make it a garden of great note, and it has been very tastefully placed throughout.
The Lyde garden is across the road from the main garden, and has now been given to the village for recreational use. Originally three watercress beds, surrounded by wych elms, it had become a wilderness. The Lyde, which is a tributary of the River Thames, rises here and the garden has been planted with hostas, primulas, astilbes, gunnera, taxodium, metasequoia and many shrubs clothing the steep banks.
