PGG visit to York Gate

On the outskirts of north Leeds, where suburbia ends and the countryside begins, lies a truly charming and intricate Arts and Craft style garden. York Gate Garden was lovingly created by the Spencer family from the early 1950s, and in 1994 was bequeathed to Perennial, the charity supporting horticulturalists and their families. The original one-acre garden, cleverly planned to lead you through 14 unique garden rooms, is brimming with neatly clipped topiary, eye-drawing vistas and unusual plants. Often referred to as the
‘Mini-Hidcote’ the garden feels much bigger than its footprint, and plant enthusiasts and designers alike can find inspiration from the many different garden rooms.

Over the past five years the garden has gone through significant development, expanding to around 3.5 acres to future-proof the Spencers’ legacy. A new plant nursery stocked with the horticultural treasures found growing in the garden has been developed, and new garden rooms including a Sunken Mediterranean Garden, a Pillar Garden and a Woodland Walk have been added, expanding the garden’s diverse plant collection. The passionate team of horticulturists led by Head Gardener Jack Ogg are continuing to push the horticultural boundaries, adding new and interesting plants while being true to the original vision of the family.

PGG visit to Golden Acre Park

Golden Acre Park is in Bramhope, and comprises some 137 acres (55 ha). It opened privately in 1932 as an amusement park with a miniature railway, swimming pool and a boating lake. There was also a dance hall, ponies, water-chute and a monorail. The venture failed in 1938 and after the Second World War it was taken over by the council in 1945.

The gardens contain National Plant Collections of Chrysanthemum (Charms and Cascade), Delphinium elatum cvs, Deutzia, Hemerocallis, Hosta (large leaved), Philadelphus, Phlox paniculata, Primula auricula, Solenostemon, Symphyotrichum novi-belgii and Syringa.

The large lake which was formed by damming the Adel Beck also provides for the nature reserve (owned by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust) which is adjacent to the eastern side of the park.
