Gardeners Sought For Private Estate in East Wiltshire
Job Title: Gardener (multiple vacancies)
Location: Private Estate in East Wiltshire (near Andover)
Client: A fully-staffed private estate
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm with a 1 hour lunch break
Salary: £30,000 to £35,000 gross per year
We’re looking for passionate, dedicated, and skilled Gardeners to join the gardening team on a private estate.
The successful candidates will work within one of three specialist areas: Ornamental Gardens, Garden & Parkland, or the Walled Garden, and must share a genuine enthusiasm for one of these disciplines. Whether your interests lie in ornamental planting, large-scale parkland maintenance, or productive fruit and vegetable growing, we’d love to hear from you.
Each role offers the opportunity to contribute to the beauty, function, and upkeep of this remarkable estate. Under the guidance of a Team Leader (and reporting to the Head Gardener), you will play an important part in maintaining the gardens and grounds to the highest possible standards.
Key Areas of the Estate:
- Ornamental Garden Team: Main House and Courtyard Gardens, Arrival Zone, Maze, Lawns, Shrubbery, Accommodation Zones, and associated garden spaces.
- Garden and Parkland Team: Front Park, Arboretum, Lady’s Walk, Upper Park (South and North), and Paddocks.
- Walled Garden Team: Walled Garden, Orchard, Glasshouses, Service Yard, Composting Facility, and Homewood South.
General Duties:
- Support your Team Leader in executing daily gardening and landscaping tasks.
- Perform regular watering, weeding, pruning, and feeding of plants.
- Plant, cultivate, and maintain a range of plants, from formal borders and trees to vegetables, fruit, and cut flowers.
- Assist with landscape development and garden projects.
- Maintain garden tools, machinery, and equipment in good condition.
- Monitor for pests and diseases, implementing controls as needed.
Area-Specific Tasks:
- Parkland: Operate ride-on, pedestrian, and tractor-mounted grass-cutting equipment; manage amenity lawns and wildflower meadows.
- Walled Garden: Assist with propagation, glasshouse displays, container plants, seasonal vegetables, and composting.
- Ornamental: Maintain formal garden areas, maze, lawns, and seasonal plantings across high-visibility locations.
Requirements
We’re looking for candidates with a combination of the following (depending on the area you’re most passionate about):
- Experience in horticulture, gardening, landscaping, or grounds maintenance.
- Strong plant knowledge – whether it’s lawn care, ornamental planting, or fruit and vegetable production.
- Previous experience in one or more of the following is advantageous: wildflower meadows, glasshouse care, propagation, orchard management, turf maintenance.
- Comfortable using horticultural machinery (mowers, tractors, strimmers, etc.).
- Certifications such as PA1, PA6a, chainsaw, compact tractor use, or horticultural qualifications are desirable.
- A valid UK driving licence is essential.
