Exciting opportunity for enthusiastic Head Gardener to manage our team across 50 acres


An opportunity has arisen for a Head gardener Near Tralee, Ireland. 

The gardens are circa 50 acres. Mild winters are a microclimatic feature, but with salt winds in many areas. 

The garden is run organically as much as possible, but is not certified. The current staff maintain a wide variety; House flowers and plants, outdoor containers, a cut flower garden, tunnels and glass houses, a Vegetable garden, Wild flower Meadows, several formal and walled gardens, in classic Oriental, French and Italian styles including topiary and several water features and ponds, extensive wild flower areas, borders trees and hedges. There are also lawns to maintain, weeding, mulching and planting of borders and shrubberies.

You will be required to make sure machinery is serviced and staff have all they require to work; PPE, training, safety, handtools ,sundries and supplies. (compost, woodchip fertilizer feed IPM etc.) 

Fix or find contractors for plumbing wiring irrigation water features, paths. make sure refuse and recycling is sorted. Redesign of beds, hedges and borders to include plant orders materials, workflow, contractors etc. You will report directly to the owner and liaise with the estate manager on overlapping tasks. 

Duties and Responsibilities of the Role: 

  • Manage the team, workflow, safety and prioritization of tasks. 
  • Plan and liaise with the owner, staff, and manager to ensure smooth operation and maintenance of the garden.
  • Plant and cultivate a wide variety of flowers, shrubs, trees, and other plants to enhance the beauty and diversity of the garden and landscape.
  • Prepare soil beds and maintain the soil’s quality through activities like composting, mulching, and fertilization.
  • Monitor watering needs and ensure plants receive the appropriate amount of water through hand-watering or irrigation systems.
  • Prune trees, shrubs, and bushes to maintain their shape, encourage healthy growth, and remove dead or diseased branches.
  • Regularly remove weeds from garden beds and apply appropriate pest control measures to protect plants from pests and diseases.
  • Mow, edge, and maintain lawns to keep them neat and well-manicured.
  • Seasonal Planting: Plan and execute seasonal planting and border displays to provide colour and variety throughout the year.
  • Implement landscaping projects, such as installing pathways, garden structures, and decorative elements.
  • Perform routine garden maintenance tasks, including raking, leaf blowing, and cleaning garden areas.
  • Maintain gardening tools and equipment in good working condition, performing routine checks and arranging for repairs as needed.
  • Identify and differentiate between various plants, flowers, and trees, and possess an understanding of their specific care requirements.
  • Follow safety guidelines while using gardening tools and equipment, and ensure the same for team members; ensuring the safety of oneself and others in the garden.

Requirements for the role: 

  • Previous experience in gardening and directing teams. 
  • The ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, digging, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Good knowledge of plants, gardening techniques, and landscaping principles.
  • Strong attention to detail to maintain the garden’s aesthetics and overall health.
  • The ability to work well as part of a team or independently, depending on the scope of the gardening project.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, adapting to seasonal demands and gardening requirements.
  • A creative flair and an eye for design to create a visually appealing garden.
  • Ability to schedule in-house workers and external contractors.
  • Ability to source materials and labour.
  • Ability to problem solve, manage resources and staff.
  • Ability to motivate and nurture a diverse team and liaise with the owner, guests, manager and contractors.

The Applicant should have: 

  • A positive, “can do” attitude. 
  • Horticultural qualifications.
  • Strong interest in sustainability/ organic and ecological practices including an understanding of wildlife friendly practices.
  • Good work ethic.
  • Ability to train and retain staff.
  • Ability to organise and communicate effectively.
  • Interest in personal and professional development.
  • At least 5 years gardening experience, level 5 qualification or above or extensive experience in a managerial role.
  • Good gardening and horticulture knowledge.
  • A commitment and interest in wildlife-friendly and organic garden practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • An ability to manage your time efficiently .
  • A working knowledge of health and safety standards and implementation.
