Reliable, creative head gardener required to join our team caring for an 8 acre private garden.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a hands-on Head Gardener at Barkby Hall in Leicestershire.

The position is offered on a full-time basis to head a team who care for an 8 acre private garden, which has been the family home for about 800 years. The main garden has herbaceous borders both formal and informal, a scented garden, white garden, shrubs roses, ornamental trees, water features and a large pond (maintained on contract). Also, there is a woodland garden of rhododendrons and spring bulbs with wildflowers. There is a one and half acre walled kitchen garden, a walled cut flower garden with an extensive range of greenhouses, which house a collection of Camellias and Sarracenias. The 100 acre Parkland is managed by other estate staff.

The role

The ideal candidate will be creative, and have good plant knowledge, communication skills and practical abilities as well as having a true passion for plants and gardening.
He or she will need to be hard-working, honest, and reliable. They will also need the ability to run a budget and supervise other labour and trainees if necessary. Appropriate training certificates would be beneficial but not essential, as training can be given.
The successful candidate will be able to: –
  • Lead, manage and motivate a small team of garden staff.
  • Develop, enhance the gardens and grounds with the ability to design planting areas.
  • Maintain herbaceous borders, shrubberies, greenhouses and all areas of the gardens in liaison with the Family and their Agent.
  • Ability to manage external contractors.
  • Ensure the gardens and grounds are kept tidy.
  • Ability to operate and maintain all typical garden machinery.

Experience

The ideal candidate would have appropriate quality experience and HNC or equivalent qualifications in Horticulture. He or she would have a commitment to quality and have organisational skills, as well as an ability to prioritise tasks.

Salary

£28,000 +  Depending on experience.
