Join our small team working within the estate and gardens surrounding a beautiful 17th century Manor House

Experienced Gardener required for private estate Bucks/Oxon border.

Job title: Senior Gardener (live-out).
Location: private estate near Thame.
Working hours: Full time permanent position. Monday-Friday based on a 37.5 hr week.
Salary: £30,000 – £35,000 per annum depending on experience.
Benefits: 20 days payed holiday + bank holidays.
Pension scheme.

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Gardener to join the small team working within the estate and gardens surrounding a 17th century Manor House. The property is situated near the pretty market town of Thame.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the continuing development and maintenance of the diverse and beautiful gardens, working closely with the Head Gardener and the owners. This position would suit a knowledgeable and energetic plants person with a creative eye, a strong horticultural background, and excellent attention to detail.

Requirements

Practical experience in garden and estate work to include:
  • Kitchen and cut flower gardening. The growing of a wide range of vegetables and flowers for the house.
  • Greenhouse and propagation. There is a large Alitex greenhouse which is used primarily to overwinter and propagate plants for the summer garden as well as growing Tomatoes, Aubergines and Peppers.
  • Lawn care and maintenance.
  • Species-specific pruning.
  • Ornamental border maintenance. There are many mixed planting schemes throughout the garden, so good knowledge of what’s required to maintain these is essential.
  • Maintenance of water features. We have a number of formal ponds with fountains and a large wildlife pond with marginal plantings.
  • Wild flower meadow maintenance and creation.
  • Operating and maintaining garden machinery including a compact tractor with loader.
  • The maintenance of trained fruit trees, wall shrubs, hedges and topiary.
  • General wood and parkland management.

Candidate profile

The ideal applicant will be:
  • Experienced at Senior gardener level.
  • Qualified in horticulture to level 3.
  • Competent across all areas of ornamental and productive gardening.
  • Organised, self motivated, and proactive.
  • Trustworthy and respectful of a private family environment.
  • Flexible, with a positive,“ can-do” attitude.
