The PGG Scotland visit to Culzean Castle, South Ayrshire coast, Scotland 2010.
Culzean is one of Scotland’s best loved Castles, offering something for everyone to enjoy. Situated on the South Ayrshire coast, just off the A719, Culzean Castle is located 12 miles south of Ayr and 4 miles west of Maybole.
There have been productive and ornamental gardens at Culzean since the middle of the 17th century. The original Walled Garden was situated in front of the old castle and is now the Fountain Court garden. Fan trained peaches, apricots and nectarines along with apples and pears adorned the terrace walls. When the Castle was re-designed in the late 18th century a walled garden was built in its present day situation. There have been several changes to the layout of the garden over the years but the shape and area have not changed in the last 150 years.
The gardens and Home Farm of Culzean provided a huge variety of fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs and poultry and there would have been a plentiful supply of fish, shellfish and game. Two ice houses at Culzean provided ice for cooling drinks, making ice cream, and preserving food.
